Established in 1966, Bank of Kigali is the largest bank in Rwanda by Total Assets, with 32.9% market share as of 30 September 2015. The Bank has a wide distribution network that includes branches, self-service channels such as internet banking, deposit-taking ATMs and Point of Sale terminals as well as channels that are geared towards promoting financial inclusion such as mobile vans and agent outlets.

The Bank has a short term credit rating of A1+ and a long term rating of AA-, with a stable outlook, from Global Credit Rating (GCR). In 2011, the Bank became the second domestic company to be listed on the Rwandan Stock Exchange. The Bank was awarded the 2014 and 2015 African Banker Award for Best Bank in East Africa as well as the 2015 Euromoney Award for Excellence as the Best Bank in Rwanda. Since 2009, the Bank has been recognised for seven years running as the Best Bank in Rwanda by Emeafinance and for six years as Bank of the Year by The Banker.

 In 2011 it was also recognized as the Company of the Year (COYA) by the Kenya Institute of Management Rwanda and was recently bestowed as the Best Financial Reporting Company in Rwanda 2015 at the Annual Financial Reporting Award (FiRe) held in Nairobi, Kenya.
